Build Spotlight: Chris Gilder’s ( @nr_mymmeryloss ) 1992 Mazda B2600i. What better way to finish off my trio of truck spotlights than with a real deal minitruck build? And Chris’s Mazda may be my favorite of the breed. If you looked through the pictures before reading this then you might have noticed “Rotary Power” written on the tailgate. The writing, a throwback to the 70s Mazda REPU, isn’t a lie. In the shaved engine bay sits a JDM S5 13B Turbo II rotary engine fully balanced and blueprinted, street ported and fitted with an upgraded Comp T04E turbo and all the necessary supporting mods, amongst other things. Something I know everyone noticed is the stance. Achieving such a low height was not easy, and to get the doors to sit comfortably on the tarmac Chris commissioned a full reinforced and TIG welded CNC’d skeletal frame in order to drop the body a full 5 inches. The second piece of the equation is the bag setup, using Slam Specialties’ RE bags and MC.2 controller, a custom torsion bar bag setup, Viair compressors, 3/8” hardline and a billet seamless tank housed in the bed area. On the exterior, the truck has received a full respray in PPG B5 Blue, with additions such as a Ford Ranger bumper and headlights, APR carbon mirrors, clear corners and tails, and a slew of custom bead rolling on the insides of the bed, the firewall and roll pan. Additionally, the frame and suspension have both been fully powdercoated, the rockers and rear quarter panels have been sectioned, and Downstar hardware takes the place of the factory bolts. For wheels, a 5 lug conversion allows Chris to run a set of custom stepped Super Advan SA3R three spokes, behind which sit drilled and slotted rotors. Chris keeps the energy going in the interior, with mods such as a RHD conversion using the dash from an FC, a beefy speaker system, custom door cards, a full reupholstering in Recaro fabric, splashes of carbon fiber and a prime view of the custom frame. Of course, there are countless other mods I had to leave out for space reasons, so if you want to get the full scoop, message me and I can send you the specs list.
