Texto original📝: This 3D animation shows you how the DNA code is transcribed into messenger RNA and then translated into a protein. Starting in the nucleus, we see how the DNA code is converted to messenger RNA by the process of transcription. We then follow the messenger RNA into the cytoplasm where it is bound by protein factories, called ribosomes. The ribosomes read the messenger RNA to produce a chain of amino acids. Each amino acid is delivered to the ribosome by a transfer RNA? molecule depending on the code in the messenger RNA. These amino acids are added in sequence to form a chain of amino acids. After the last amino acid is added to the chain, it folds up to form the final protein.

I met Venki Ramakrishnan! 👨‍🔬 something a bit different from stem cells.

Who is he? Venki won the Nobel prize for chemistry 👨‍🔬, he is the current president of the royal society 👑 and he's a group leader at the LMB at the university of Cambridge🎓 (Neat fact if the LMB was a country it would be 6th in the world for number of Nobel lauriets).

He won the Nobel prize for his work in discovering the structure of the ribosome. The ribosome is a protein that converts mRNA to proteins. What is more amazing is that the ribosome being a protein itself, so it's a bit of a chicken 🐔 and egg 🐣 scenario. Venki started with 2 PhD students and used crystallography 💎 to discover the exact structure of the ribosome.

If you're wondering why it's important, until the structure of the ribosome was discovered people couldn't understand exactly how things like antibiotics worked 🤔 Some antibiotics work by disrupting the ribososome. Bacterial ribosomes are different from humans and when the structure was discovered scientists could analyse how the antibiotics actually functioned.

If you get the chance and you're an aspiring scientist I highly recommended buying his book. It gives a great insight into what it's really like to be a scientist. Also he's a lovely guy.

The ribosome is a protein that converts mRNA to proteins. What is more amazing is that the ribosome being a protein itself, so it's a bit of a chicken 🐔 and egg 🐣 scenario. Venki started with 2 PhD students and used crystallography 💎 to discover the exact structure of the ribosome. • If you're wondering why it's important, until the structure of the ribosome was discovered people couldn't understand exactly how things like antibiotics worked 🤔 Some antibiotics work by disrupting the ribososome. Bacterial ribosomes are different from humans and when the structure was discovered scientists could analyse how the antibiotics actually functioned. • If you get the chance and you're an aspiring scientist I highly recommended buying his book. It gives a great insight into what it's really like to be a scientist. We brainstormed ideas and it slowly evolved into an idea that would not only teach him but could also be shared to teach others.
