When Patrick Gavin Duffy compiled The Official Mixers Manual the year after prohibition ended, he wanted to historically document the important cocktails of the speakeasy culture even though they are far inferior to any cocktail of more liberal times. Duffy marks these cocktail recipes with a small circle to the left of the title, as he did with the Thunderclap Cocktail on this page, denoting his disapproval for this cocktail. AN EXTENSIVE COLLECTION AND CAREFULLY SELECTED LIST OF COCKTAILS SERVED IN FIRST CLASS BARS THROUGHOUT THE CIVILIZED WORLD SINCE THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR, THIS IS PATRICK GAVIN DUFFY'S OFFICIAL MIXER'S MANUAL
Patrick Gavin Duffy's career in the bartending trade spans 40 years. Gavin states that "A Barkeeper shines in the reflected glory of his patrons," and his patrons include many distinguished Americans of the time: J.P. Morgan, Oscar Wilde, Cecil B. De Mille and William Jennings Bryant
Duffy didn't consider bartending a profession, but a trade, and treated his skills with the utmost of professionalism.
The Official Mixer's Manual is a well compiled list of drink recipes from the pre-prohibition and prohibition eras. He also has some of his own creations, such as the Monkey Gland listed.
